Salina
The narrative of the novel Salina can be depicted through the character Siti Salina, a prostitute who supports and takes care of Abdul Fakar, a lazy man who often asks for money from her. Abdul Fakar is a drunkard, a womanizer, and enjoys hitting Siti Salina while demanding money from her. Despite being frequently beaten by Abdul Fakar, Siti Salina continues to love him because his face resembles that of her late lover, Muhamad Yusuf, who died in World War II. Originally, Siti Salina was a wealthy child, but due to the war that resulted in the death of her family members and the loss of her possessions, she had to support herself by becoming a prostitute.
Additionally, the novel Salina also portrays the conflict experienced by the character Nahidah, who is forced by her stepmother to work as a servant to fulfill her stepmother's desire for a luxurious life. Nahidah is also often harassed by Abdul Fakar without the knowledge of her stepmother and Siti Salina. Under Abdul Fakar's instigation, Zarina expelled Sunarto and Mansur, who were frequently ridiculed by her stepmother, leading them to leave home to join the military. This situation emboldened Abdul Fakar to further harass Nahidah, eventually resulting in him raping her one night when she returned from washing clothes. After being raped by Abdul Fakar and Cik Salim, Nahidah fled Singapore and later married a laborer, settling in Penang. Hilmy felt sad about Nahidah's departure, while Siti Salina, after being advised by Katijah, also left Abdul Fakar and migrated to Kelantan. Abdul Fakar then returned to sea after failing to find Siti Salina and regretted his actions towards her.
