Human interest in libraries began several thousand years ago. Around 3500 BC, the ancient Mesopotamian society stored libraries of clay tablets with cuneiform writing. The earliest history was initiated by the Sumerians, with a great civilization of city-states that included irrigation canals and remarkable technical and artistic achievements overall. The basic function of a library is to help us understand our past history, our identity, and the changes we have undergone. Syed Hussein Alatas stated that a library is like a nuclear reactor. The most significant monument of excellence for a university is the quality of its library.
